Wyoming was once known as the Jade State, but from 1977 to 2007, one geologist (Professor Hausel, also known as the GemHunter) changed this designation by finding more than a hundred gemstone, gold, diamond and mineral occurrences in the Cowboy State such that the state is now better known as the Gemstone state.

Sapphires, which were thrown away by miners in the gold rush days, are now the most valuable gemstones found in America. Montana is also very well known for its Native Copper deposits, was included in the gold rush days when gold was discovered in 1864, and has produce lots of silver, zinc manganese and coal.

For rockhounds and prospectors, it doesn't get much better than Montana! There are an abundance of rare minerals found in this state including sapphires, gold, amethyst, and rhodochrosite. Plus, eastern Montana has some of the world's finest fossil hunting locations for dinosaur bones!
